difference between engagement and pre-wedding shoot

Thinking about doing a photoshoot before your big day, but not quite sure which type is right for you?
You’ve probably heard of engagement shoots, pre-wedding sessions, and bridal portraits — but what’s the actual difference? And how do people in different parts of the world interpret them?
The truth is, these terms can mean slightly different things depending on where you are.
In this post, I’ll break down what each of these shoot types typically involves, how different cultures approach them, and how to choose the one that suits you best — whether you’re planning a destination wedding or simply want to document this special chapter of your story.
Engagement Shoot

What is an Engagement shoot?
Popular in: UK, US, Canada, Australia
Style: Smart casual – dressed up a little, but not too formal
Purpose: To share the engagement, create Save the Date cards, or use on the wedding website
Compared to wedding-day photos, engagement shoots are relaxed and authentic. It’s about documenting who the couple are, together, in their everyday rhythm. In short, the difference between engagement and pre-wedding shoots often comes down to timing and purpose.
Pre-wedding Shoot

What is a Pre-wedding Shoot?
Popular in: US, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, China
Style: Wedding attire and styled looks
Purpose: For wedding-day slideshows, printed albums, or as a keepsake
In the US, many couples choose pre-wedding shoots simply because the wedding day is so hectic – they’d rather have time to focus on each other and enjoy the shoot without pressure. In short, the difference between engagement and pre-wedding shoots often comes down to timing and purpose.
Bridal Portrait

What is a Bridal Shoot?
Popular in: US, Canada, Australia
Style: Bridal gown – solo portraits
Purpose: To enjoy the bridal look fully, often on a makeup trial day or after the wedding
Bridal shoots are ideal for anyone who wants quiet, dedicated time to enjoy their wedding gown and capture something elegant and timeless.
Proposal Shoot

More and more couples are choosing to have their proposal moment professionally captured.
Some go for a surprise, while others plan it together – but either way, it’s about preserving one of the most emotional milestones in a relationship.
Side note: France, Italy, Spain
Traditionally, engagement or pre-wedding shoots weren’t a big thing in Southern Europe.
But in recent years, cities like Paris, Milan and Barcelona have become popular spots for stylish and intimate couple sessions – especially among younger locals and international couples.
Just to add – I also shoot pre-weddings and engagement sessions in these regions. The mix of architecture, light, and atmosphere always brings something special to the photos.
